Modernization of the 110/20 kV transformer station Magura, Focșani

The 110/20 kV Măgura transformer station is one of the important energy nodes for supplying consumers in the north-eastern area of Focșani. In operation since 1976, the substation serves household, commercial and industrial consumers through the 20 kV and 0.4 kV distribution networks, playing an essential role in the functioning of the local energy infrastructure. As a result of the advanced degree of physical and moral wear and tear of the existing equipment, Distribuție Energie Electrică Romania has started an extensive modernization program, implemented by ADREM.

The project aimed to increase operational safety, reduce technological losses and reduce power outage times. The works included both detailed design activities and elaboration of As-Built documentation, as well as the complete modernization of high and medium voltage installations, automation systems and auxiliary infrastructure.

On the 110 kV side, the primary equipment related to the line-transformer block cells was replaced, including separators, circuit breakers, current transformers and voltage transformers. A new configuration with a 110 kV sectioned single bar was also made and the equipment associated with the power transformers was replaced. The project also included the replacement of the 20 kV capacitor bank, the modernization of electrical protections and general signaling systems.

An important chapter of the investment was the implementation of a modern SCADA system and the integration of all equipment into the command and control architecture of the distribution operator. At the same time, the automation systems of the station, the direct current and alternating current installations, the lighting and heating installations, as well as the protection systems against atmospheric overvoltages were modernized. During the works, the earth sockets were rebuilt and the OPGW conductor related to the 110 kV power line was replaced.

On the medium voltage side, the project included the complete replacement of the 20 kV cells, with 28 new cells being installed. The works were carried out in stages, in four distinct phases, so that the power supply to consumers would not be affected during the modernization. In parallel, new protection and monitoring equipment was installed at the Focșani Nord station, contributing to increasing the level of security and reliability of the entire infrastructure.

The implementation of the project took place between September 2017 and April 2021 and was influenced by significant challenges, including the delays generated by the COVID-19 pandemic on supply chains. However, the works were successfully completed, the result being a fully modernized station, capable of meeting the current and future requirements of the distribution network.

Through this investment, Distribuție Energie Electrică Romania benefits from a modern, digitized and much safer energy infrastructure, capable of ensuring the continuity of supply for consumers in the municipality of Focșani and adjacent areas.
